DNA barcoding
The course will provide you the basic concepts of DNA barcoding for biological identifications. You will learn and train all the laboratory procedures (PCR, DNA sequencing) to identify a specimen. The course will also address the theory behind the concept and the use of reference databases.
COURSE TOPICS
DNA barcoding – the concept
Species problem
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Sanger sequencing
Equipment and reagents
Laboratory procedures
Blast analyses
Reference databases
PARTICIPANTS
The training course are suitable for a wide range of professionals employed in public or private laboratories working in research or customer services. For example:
Laboratory Managers
Scientific Personnel
Laboratory Technicians
Newly recruited staff
ACQUIRED COMPETENCIES
Understanding the power and limitations of DNA barcoding
Design a PCR and DNA sequencing protocol
Setting up reactions
Interpreting PCR and sequencing results
Blast analyses in reference databases (e.g., NCBI, BOLD)
Basic concepts on molecular genetics and phylogeny
TRAINING METHODOLOGY
The courses include lectures and laboratory sessions. The training includes presentations with instructor-guided interactive discussions with participants. The practical lessons are designed to allow all participants to train extensively the teaching procedures. We provide forms, protocols and additional resources for future use within your laboratory.
INSTRUCTORS
The courses are conducted by specialized scientists with vast experience in the lectured topics.
CERTIFICATES
All participants receive a certificate of attendance and a record detailing the topics covered during the course.
TEACHING AND EVALUATION LANGUAGES
English or Portuguese.
